Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of the busiest theme parks in Asia. It's also one of the most confusing to buy tickets for. Prices change by date, Express Passes come in dozens of variants, and Super Nintendo World has its own entry rules. This guide covers what you need to buy, where to buy it, and how to avoid a wasted day.
- Admission: buy a dated 1-Day Studio Pass online as early as you can. Adult prices start from about ¥8,400 and rise on busy dates.
- Super Nintendo World: a Studio Pass alone does not guarantee entry. You need a free timed-entry ticket from the official USJ app after you enter the park, or an Express Pass that includes area entry.
- Express Pass: worth it on weekends, holidays and event seasons if you only have one day. Book it as soon as you know your date, because it sells out.
- Getting there: JR to Universal City Station. It's about 15 minutes from Osaka Station and about 45–60 minutes from Kyoto.
USJ ticket prices: how date-based pricing works
USJ doesn't have one fixed ticket price. Every date has its own price. Quiet weekdays are cheapest, and weekends, Japanese school holidays and event periods cost the most. For visits from September 1, 2026, USJ moved to a more dynamic system. Each date opens at a starting price, and that price can go up after sales begin if demand rises. A lower starting tier of about ¥8,400 for adults was added at the same time. If you buy early, you keep the price you paid even if that date gets more expensive later.
Peak-day adult tickets have recently been around ¥11,000–¥12,000. Child tickets (ages 4–11) cost less, and children under 4 enter free. Prices can now move, so check the current price for your date rather than relying on any fixed figure.
| Ticket | What it covers | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1-Day Studio Pass | Park entry for one dated day | Most visitors |
| 1.5-Day Studio Pass | An afternoon plus a full day | Arriving in Osaka at midday |
| 2-Day Studio Pass | Two consecutive days | Fans who want to see everything without an Express Pass |
| Twilight Pass | Entry from mid-afternoon (sold only on selected dates; check availability) | Short visits, evening shows |
| Universal Express Pass | Shorter queues on set rides, often with Super Nintendo World entry. No park admission | Busy dates, one-day visitors |
Super Nintendo World timed entry rules
Super Nintendo World (Mario Kart, Yoshi's Adventure and the Donkey Kong Country area with Mine-Cart Madness) is under entry control on most days. These are the main ways in:
- Free Area Timed Entry Ticket in the official USJ app. Since January 5, 2026, paper tickets have ended and the app is the only way to get same-day timed-entry and standby-entry tickets. You can register your Studio Pass QR code in the app in advance. Timed entry only becomes available after your ticket has been scanned at the park gate. Slots go fast on busy days, often within the first hour, and they aren't guaranteed. On very busy days USJ may switch to a lottery instead.
- An Express Pass that includes area timed entry. Many Express Pass variants include a set entry time for Super Nintendo World. Read the product details, because not every variant includes it.
- A USJ hotel or travel package with guaranteed area entry. Some official partner hotel packages include a set entry time. Worth checking if you're booking accommodation anyway.
- Arriving very early. On some days, guests who head straight to the area right after opening get in before entry control begins. You can't count on this.
If Super Nintendo World is the main reason you're going, the free app ticket is a gamble. Plan for an Express Pass with area entry, or at least arrive well before opening.
Express Pass types, and why they sell out
The Universal Express Pass lets you use a shorter queue on a fixed list of rides, usually at set times. The number in the name (4, 5 or 7) is the number of rides included. There are many variants with different ride lists, so read the variant, not just the number.
- Express Pass 4: the cheapest type. Variants mix rides such as Mine-Cart Madness, Yoshi's Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or the Minion rides, plus one ride of your choice.
- Express Pass 5: a middle option, often including Mario Kart and Harry Potter.
- Express Pass 7: covers the most headline rides, including both Nintendo areas, and suits peak days.
Express Pass prices also change by date. The cheapest Express Pass 4 variants start at roughly ¥10,000 on quiet dates (check the current price), and Express Pass 7 can cost several times that on peak days. USJ releases a limited number for each date, so popular weekends, Golden Week, summer, New Year and the Halloween event season can sell out weeks ahead. Remember that you still need a Studio Pass. The Express Pass doesn't include park admission.
Which tickets should you buy?
| Your situation | What to buy |
|---|---|
| Quiet weekday, Nintendo not a must | 1-Day Studio Pass only; use the free app ticket for Nintendo |
| Weekend, holiday or Halloween season, one day only | Studio Pass + an Express Pass that includes Super Nintendo World entry |
| Two days available | 2-Day Studio Pass; usually no Express Pass needed |
| Tight budget | Weekday Studio Pass bought early, arrive before opening |
Where to buy: official site vs Klook
- Official USJ website or app: you buy direct and see the full range of Express Pass variants. Some visitors find the checkout fiddly, especially with overseas cards.
- Klook: an authorized USJ ticket seller. It issues QR e-tickets that scan at the gate, and its checkout works in English with most international cards. It often has combo deals and sometimes a small discount. Klook's prices also follow USJ's date-based pricing, so compare before you buy.
- KKday: another option for Studio Passes and Express Pass bundles, and it sometimes runs promotions.
Whichever you use, make sure the ticket is dated for your visit, issued as a direct-entry QR code, and clear about whether Super Nintendo World area entry is included.

Tips for beating the crowds
- Pick a weekday outside Japanese holidays. Avoid New Year, Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon (mid-August) and school holidays.
- Arrive 45–60 minutes before the listed opening time. The gates often open early when a queue builds.
- Set up the USJ app before your visit. Link your tickets in advance so you can request timed entry the moment you're scanned in.
- Have mobile data that works. The app, timed entry and wait times all need a connection. See eSIM vs pocket WiFi and how much data you need.
- Ride the big attractions early or late. Waits usually peak from late morning to mid-afternoon.
- Budget realistically. With an Express Pass, food and souvenirs, a full day can easily cost ¥20,000+ per adult. See cash or card in Japan.
Getting to USJ from Osaka and Kyoto
| From | Route | Time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Osaka Station (Umeda) | JR Loop Line to Nishikujo, then JR Yumesaki (Sakurajima) Line to Universal City. Some trains run direct | About 15 min |
| Namba | Hanshin Namba Line to Nishikujo, then JR Yumesaki Line | About 25–30 min |
| Kyoto Station | JR Special Rapid to Osaka, then JR to Universal City | About 45–60 min |
| Kansai Airport | Direct limousine bus (limited timetable) | About 60–70 min |
Fares from central Osaka are a few hundred yen, and from Kyoto roughly ¥1,000. Tap through with an ICOCA or other IC card. The JR Pass covers the JR train ride but not park admission. Flying into Osaka? See our Kansai Airport to Osaka and Kyoto guide.
FAQ
Do I need to buy USJ tickets in advance?
Yes, as a rule. Busy dates can sell out, and under the 2026 pricing system prices tend to go up as a date fills. Buying early usually gets you the lowest price for your date.
Does a Studio Pass include Super Nintendo World?
It lets you into the park, but on most days you also need a timed-entry ticket for the Nintendo area. You can get one free through the official app after you enter (not guaranteed), or through an Express Pass that includes area entry.
Is the Express Pass worth the money?
On a weekend or holiday with only one day, it can save hours of queuing and guarantee Nintendo area entry. On a quiet weekday, or with a 2-day pass, many visitors manage without one.
Is Klook cheaper than the official site?
Sometimes slightly, especially with promotions or bundles, but not always. Klook's main advantage is a smoother English checkout that accepts international cards. Compare both for your date.
Bottom line
Buy a dated Studio Pass early, decide whether Super Nintendo World is a must, and if it is, either get an Express Pass that includes area entry or be at the gate well before opening with the app ready. On peak dates, book the Express Pass the moment you know your plans.
